Cruising At 30km a Second and Attempting Not To Crash is a community-participatory performance that investigates the relationship between human bodies—specifically those identifying as LGBTQ+—and the natural world. The work deliberately embraces queer idiosyncrasies as inherent, beautiful sites of potential, challenging the failures embedded within traditional dance and theatre structures. Through a workshop process, community members co-devised a collective dance score. They were then invited to perform this score in a natural green space, alone and asynchronously, recording their unique expressions of the movement. These diverse video-recorded "nature dances" are presented alongside each other, highlighting the individuality and natural variation within the shared score. Complementing this is a scripted piece featuring three performers navigating the rehearsal of an unknown show, all while contemplating the Earth's orbit at 30 kilometers per second and the hypothetical terror of the planet ceasing its spin. The scripted element and the asynchronous video dances were intentionally never rehearsed together until the public presentation. This confluence of unpreparedness, individuality, and existential consideration ultimately manifests as a deep meditation on the themes of failure, contingency, and futurity.
