Service Description

How places bring about connection, transformation and vibrancy matters. Yet, our cities are made to keep our places of work and home separated. With COVID-19, the places in our communities where we would typically gather, are no longer places to convene and assemble. Prior to COVID, that abandoned lot near your house had the most unused potential, but now, with COVID restrictions, playgrounds, parking lots, back alleys and the sidewalk in front of our homes are the most unused spaces. These spaces, immediately outside our door, in our communities, offer up the potential for building community vibrancy, transforming experiences one would typically have with that place and also builds connection, safely, between neighbours and those who are passing by. This workshop gives participants a personal laboratory to bring about meaningful change to the spaces in one’s community. Bringing together elements of placemaking and artistic interventions, participants will walk away with a stronger connection to their immediate community, tools for ideating and organizing, and a better understanding of historical placemaking and public art interventions in the social, cultural and political context. Participants will be led through a five-week process that takes them from mapping, observing, ideating, organizing and implementing placemaking or public space creative intervention in their immediate community.
